5th Grade Curriculum Overview
What to expect your child will learn this year in fifth grade in:
Reading:
In Reading, students will be learning a variety of reading strategies throughout the year. We use a reader's workshop model in my classroom (using the daily 5 and CAFE reading strategies) along with the Houghton Mifflin reading series. Class read-alouds will be used to help model the reading strategies during whole group meeting time. Students also will engage in independent reading time where they will practice and apply the reading strategies. Students will also meet with the teacher in a small-group setting during guided reading and in strategy focus groups.
Writing:
The class will be writing a lot this year. I use a writer's workshop approach during our writing time. Students will be going through the complete writing process and will learn about the 6+1 Traits of writing. During writer's workshop students will have a writing mini-lesson and independant writing time to work on assigned writing projects as well as their own choice writing pieces to publish. The traits of good writing are: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Conventions and Presentation.
Math:
This year I will be doing a mathematics workshop to teach math concepts. Our school uses the Houghton Mifflin math series. We will cover a wide range of mathematic topics including: Place Value, Division, Graphing, Standard and Metric Measurements, Fractions (Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide), Decimals (Multiply and Divide), Area, Volume, and Protractor skills. During the math workshop, students will be engaged in activities to enhance their mathematical thinking and skills. We will work in whole group, small group and individually on math skills.
Science:
We are starting a new program for science called STEM. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The topics we will be studying are: Energy and Forces of Motion, Human Body Systems, Planetary Motions, Simple Machines, Cells and Heredity, as well as Evolution & Animal Adaptations.
Social Studies:
In fifth grade we learn all about the history of the United States and how it was founded, both the history of its people but also how our government was established. We also learn about the core democratic values and constitutional principles.
Spelling:
Each Monday, student take a pretest on the words for the week. If students pass the pretest with 100%, they become an alternate speller and do a contract with 12 choice challenging words and different contract activities. If the child recieved any words wrong on the pretest they will do the contract for the week. Contracts and spelling posttests take place on Fridays.
